SCAFFOLDING IN TEACHING WRITING NEWS ITEM TEXT, ITS BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

The research aimed at investigating types of scaffolding, the ways a teacher provides and benefits challenges scaffolding in teaching writing News Item text tenth graders senior high school Bandung. This employed qualitative design, embracing characteristic case study. data were obtained from non-participant classroom observation for six meetings, one interview. collected interview transcribed then analyzed by using framework (e.g Roehler Cantlon (1997), Hammond (2001), Gibbons, (2002), Walqui (2006)). findings revealed that seven provided during text. most intensive was given Modeling stage, while removed Independent Writing stage. Regarding providing this found out such as to connect students’ prior knowledge with new concept, engage students, minimize level confusion build students‟ self-confidence. Meanwhile, are number students classroom, time constraints, demands on teacher.
